Mobile carriers around the world are excited about the prospect of the fifth-generation cellular technology – The 5G Network!
This type of technology has the capacity to improve all currently developing and innovative technologies like Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, and even self-driving cars.
However, the emergence of 5G has also ignited some old fears that people have about the health risks of introducing this new type of network that potentially gives off harmful radiation wave signals.
What is 5G?
5G is the next step in cellular technology which will eventually replace the current 4G LTE network. It harnesses the power of the millimeter-wave (mmWave) spectrum to bring us faster data speeds. This speed refers to the rate mobile users can transfer data to their mobile devices and the latency (lag) that is experienced between sending and receiving information.
5G will be capable of delivering data 10 to 100 times faster than the current 4G network and will result in speeds measured in gigabits per second (Gb/s) rather than megabits (Mb/s).
However, 5G also releases a higher frequency spectrum.
What are the Concerns?
What most people seem to be worried about is that 5G can potentially be harmful to human beings. Most think that a higher frequency also means a higher risk of cancer. There are also lesser concerns as people think that it may cause headaches or nausea as well.
The concern mainly stems from cellular towers now being built in highly populated areas, close to where residents live.
Certain experts state that 5G does not only come with a higher radiofrequency but a higher dose of radiation that can lead to illnesses.
What is RF radiation and Is it Safe?
Radiofrequency radiation is the emission of energy from a source, in this case, mobile phones and devices. Basically speaking, it is just a different name for radio waves. It is electromagnetic energy comprised of electronic and magnetic waves put together that are moving through space.
While it is true that cellphones do give off low levels of electromagnetic energy, they are much safer opposed to high-energy level devices like X-ray machines.
X-ray machines and similar devices give off ionizing energy which has the ability to ionize an atom or a molecule resulting in damaged DNA. This is what can eventually lead to cancer.
However, devices like mobile phones give off levels that can only vibrate an atom and cannot damage DNA cells.
So generally speaking, for 5G to be damaging for our wellbeing it needs to emit really high levels of RF radiation and we would also have to be standing really close to it for longer periods of time to eventually feel the bad effects of it.
So What is the Deal?
As things stand now, there is not enough evidence to support the claims and concerns of the public. While the 5G network is stronger and emits higher levels of RF radiation as opposed to 4G, there is no proof that it is really harmful to a person.
However, ongoing research is still being conducted and will eventually show the truth.
What is the Solution?
The solution, for now, is to sit back and relax as there isn’t anything to fear.
If you still want to be on the safe side, you can try and not sleep close to your phone for a better night’s rest.
